AYFL Divisions and Weight Classes Revised for 2017.
In an effort to allow players to play with their peers and to allow players of all shapes and sizes to participate in their programs the AYFL as made major changes to it's divisions for the 2017 season.  All divisions, excluding the new 7U division, will no longer have a maximum weight restrictions.   The 7U division with a maximum weight of 80 lbs will be the only division with a weight ceiling.  The 8U through 11U divsions will still have a maximum skill weight. The Skill position weight will be the max weight for any offensive position that lines up in a position were they are eligible to advance the ball: quarterback, running back, wide receiver or tight end. Their will be no weight limit for all other positions.  The 12U & 13U will have no weight restrictions for skill positions and players can play at any position regardless of size. The league age determination date will remain at May 1st.  Age determination date for the 13U will remain at January 1st.

A new 7U competitive division will play by the same rules as the 8U division with some slight modification.  Games will be played Saturday's beginning at 8:30 am and their will now be 7 games played each game day.  They Mighty Mite division will become optional and formats for games and locations are still being discussed.

It is not yet known if this decision will effect AYFL Cheerleading and if they will also be adding a new division to cheer for the new 7U Division. We will provide updates once the AYFLC has made that decision. It is expected that the age limit for Cheerleading will remain 15 years old. 2017 High School Rule Changes to Effect AYFL Play.
NFHS logoThe National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) met in February to adopt Football rule changes for 2017. Since the AYFL plays by modified High School rules, any changes will effect AYFL play in the 2017 season.
The following were Key rule changes from 2017:
The rules now stipulates that it is encroachment to strike the ball or the snapper’s hand/arm prior to the snapper releasing the ball.
Added a new option to the offended team to start the clock on the snap for an accepted penalty inside the last two minutes of either half.
In a continued effort to minimize risk, the Committee created a definition of a blinslide block.  This block involves contact by a blocker against an opponent who, because of physical positioning and focus of concentration, is vulnerable to injury. Unless initiated with open hands, it is a foul for excessive and unnecessary contact when the block is forceful and outside of the free-blocking zone.
Also in an effort to minimize risk, the Committee created a definition of a pop-up kickoff.  A pop-up kick is a free kick in which the kicker drives the ball immediately to the ground, the ball strikes the ground once and goes into the air in the manner of a ball kicked directly off the tee. Such kicks will be penalized as a dead-ball free-kick infraction.

AYFL Divisions and Weight Classes Revised for 2015.
In an effort to allow players to play with their peers the AYFL as reclassified their divisions to be based on age instead of weight. In order to do this the max weight in all divisions other than Mighty Mites has been increased. All Divisions will also have two separate weight categories going forward. There will be a max weight for the division and a skill position weight. The Skill position weight will be the max weight for any offensive position that lines up in a position were they are eligible to advance the ball: quarterback, running back, wide receiver or tight end. The max weight provision will be the limit for all other positions. Under these changes both the 12U and 13U division will now be Unlimited weight divisions. With the new weight increases, no additional weight will be given during the regular season, as in prior years.

This decision is not expected to effect AYFL Cheerleading. While the AYFLC has not met since the AYFL football decision, It is expected that the age limit for Cheerleading will remain 15 years old. Cheerleaders are eligible to participate as long as they do not turn 16 prior to January 1st, 2015.
